Arranging house cleaning for an older parent

For an older parent, the right house cleaning is the same person on the same day every visit, someone they recognize at the door, rather than a different crew each time. Start with one deep clean, then every two weeks is usually enough. A good housekeeper also tells the family what they notice, like a loose rug edge or old food in the fridge, without taking over decisions that belong to your parent.

It usually starts at a holiday. You are home for Thanksgiving or Christmas, you open the refrigerator, and you see a home that has been slipping for longer than anyone said. Your parent is managing, mostly, and does not want a fuss.

What matters most

The same face. An older person who lives alone is right to be careful about who comes into the house, and a rotating crew means a stranger at the door every second week. Ask any company you call whether the same person comes every time, and whether that is a promise or a hope.

The same day and time, too. A fixed Tuesday morning is something your parent can plan around and expect, and it means somebody is reliably in the home every other week.

Where to start

One deep clean first, so the bathroom, the kitchen and the floors start from a real baseline. After that, every two weeks keeps most homes for one or two people in good order. The things that matter most for safety get attention every visit: the bathroom floor, the kitchen, and the walkways between rooms.

The note to the family

After every visit I write a short note about anything I noticed: a light out on the stairs, a rug edge lifting, a smell from the fridge, a drip under the sink. With your parent's say, it can go to whoever arranges the cleaning. It is information, not a report card, and decisions stay with them.

What a housekeeper is not

I clean the home. I do not give medication, help with bathing or dressing, or provide personal care, which is a home care agency's work and needs people trained for it. Knowing where that line is matters as much as the cleaning does, and a company that blurs it is not doing your parent a favor.

Paying and arranging it

A son or daughter can book and pay while living somewhere else, and nothing is charged until the visit is done. I work across Valparaiso, Crown Point, Chesterton and the towns around them, and I am glad to meet your parent before the first visit so the first time I knock is not the first time they see me.
